Update January 23, 2007:

We certainly need financial help, as well as the other rescue groups who are fostering the other breeds.  But let me update you.

ALL the pugs, yes*** ALL*** are in foster care now in the PRONC system.  Because these dogs are court evidence, we must hold them until this guy has his day in court.   Our ongoing problem will be the vet bills which are skyrocketing as we speak.  We have pugs in all stages of deteriorating health and sickness.  Many both pregnant AND sick.  They have upper respiratory infections and little time to whelp date.  That is...the ones we know that are pregnant and showing.  There may be more females in our care who are bred and not showing yet.  Each pug seems to have it's own story of misery and neglect from mild cases to the extreme.

We are in the process of setting up a special webpage with pictures of these guys in their foster homes.  You can visit this page here:  http://wilson-nc.puppymillbust.org/

For now, we do not need foster homes.  What we DO need is good quality food, crates, and cash donations to offset these medical bills.  Any help you can give us will be deeply appreciated.

If you can spare a few dollars to help us in this critical mission, your tax deductible donation may be made through our PayPal account online, check can be mailed directly.

We thank you all for anything you can do to help us.

A warm and sincere "Thank You" to everyone who has made donations to help make it possible for us save these dogs!  We certainly couldn't do this without "YOU"

I wasn't aware there was a Doggie Do-Gooder's Club out there.   But we extend a special thank you as well to all the club members in coming together and choosing us to support for the month of February!  If you are interested in learning more about the Doggie D-Gooder's, you can learn more about the link below:

Update March, 2007:

First, a heartfelt ***thank you*** to all our supporters.  We could not have come this far without you. With your continued support, we will see the Newsome puppy mill dogs to their final destination...in loving pet homes!

Please bear with us.  Much of the detailed information about these dogs remains court evidence, and we are not at liberty to discuss it while the case is pending.  Our updates must be in general terms, but we can let you know where we are at this point.

All the pugs and the other breeds have been vetted and any immediate concerns such as vaccinations, wormings, ongoing infections and injuries have been treated and resolved.  All puppies have now been born that we know of.  Eight pug puppies survived and are now three and four weeks old.  All the dogs are doing well.  They are rebounding as expected from proper diet, vet care, and lots of love and gentle handling.  We have pulled them through everything from sepsis to pneumonia and all stages in between.  One male being used for stud passed away with us.  He had a grade 6 heart murmur.  It was no surprise to the vet that he passed.

PRONC has filed a civil suit against Newsome in Wilson County, NC,  We expect that to be heard March 22, 2007.  The count date for criminal charges pending against him will be May 28, 2007 in Wilson NC.

The Final Analysis of the Wilson Puppymill Bust

Darryl Newsome pled guilty to one count of misdemeanor neglect and cruelty to animals in May 2007, and he was formally convicted of the crime in August 2007.  The district attorney who handled the matter allowed Newsome to enter a plea because, despite a great deal of veterinary medical evidence, cases for animal cruelty are difficult to prosecute in order to obtain lasting criminal convictions.

As part of the plea arrangement, Newsome cannot breed animals ever again and he can only own one dog at any time for the rest of his life.  Additionally, Newsome was directed to pay Pug Rescue of NC, Inc and the Wilson County Humane Society the sum of $500.00 each to cover the costs of taking care of his former dogs.

While all of the above appears less than impressive, the end result for the rescued animals was phenomenal.  Rather than this matter drag on and on, the pugs and other dogs were signed over quickly so that all proper care could be provided.  Pug Rescue of NC, Inc. should be proud of their efforts.
