Man charged with animal cruelty
By Matthew Shaw
Daily Times Staff Writer
A man accused of mistreating dogs at a puppy-breeding
operation appeared in court Tuesday.
Darryl Newsome, 55, of 814 Little Rock Church Road, made his first appearance in Wilson County District Court, according to court officials. The trial has not yet been scheduled.
Newsome is charged with four counts — three misdemeanor charges of cruelty to animals and one felony count of cruelty to animal, Maj. J.H. Farmer of the Wilson County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday.
If convicted, Newsome would face possible fines and/or jail time, but Farmer was unsure of the maximum amounts. Felony animal cruelty is a Class 1 felony under state law.
The 39 dogs, mostly pugs, that were removed from Newsome's home Monday evening were housed Tuesday by Pug Rescue of North Carolina and some of its members. Many were carried to kennel facilities near Greensboro.

Pug Rescue's president, Christina Hedrick of
Summerville, signed an agreement with Wilson County Animal Control to care
for the dogs until the point that a Wilson County judge decides whether to
return them to Newsome.
County animal control officers brought the charges against Newsome after
dogs that had been in his care were found to have injuries that dated back
at least two years without being treated.
