Prayers and Help Needed!

As most of you already know, we rescued Ivey on September 30, 2005 from the Animal Shelter in New Bern, North Carolina. We already knew Ivey was heartworm positive and would require treatment to get rid of them. Kim our foster Mom, was kind enough to drive 4 hours away to go rescue Ivey from this wonderful and caring shelter. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Kim's vet costing more than we could afford she was unable to foster Ivey, so she met up with Cathleen to foster her through the heartworm treatment.
When the vet checked Ivey, of course they found the heartworm,........... Then there were hookworms, and a bad ear infection. Therefore, she was treated for all this and updated on her vaccines.
Ivey has looked to be depressed most of the time, which made us a bit uncomfortable, but we do see this a lot with rescues.
October 10, 2005:
Ivey started her treatment on today. Ivey was at the hospital for three days for heartworm treatment. Throwing up on Oct. 12 and had to receive fluids. Came home and laid around, only able to leash walk. Attended the picnic to be close to foster family but could not enjoy the picnic and had to stay back in the room with both Steve and I making frequent checks on her.Still looking depressed but eating and drinking, and being checked by the vet often there was no need for alarm.
Here is a picture of Ivey as she was recovering from her heartworm treatment, sunning along side of rescue Fred and Cathleen furkid, Stitches. Ivey is the first pug in the shade.
November 2, 2005:
I recieved a call from Ivey's foster Mom, Cathleen this morning. She stated that Ivey seem to be getting fat all of a sudden, and she did not eat very much and she was worried about her. She was wondering if she could be pregnant! Therefore, after a long discussion and pictures we decided to take her to the vet and be checked. ................. The test came back "POSITIVE"... "YES" Ivey was expecting babies !!!!!!!!!!!We were scared to death, because we had no idea what type or SIZE dog had breed her before the caring folks at the New Bern shelter found her! Not to mention the fact that the she has had Immiticide treatments for her heartworm. This drug could be deadly to the adult dog, and we had no idea of the effect it would have her Ivey's babies............
Taking everything in stride, Cathleen and I started the preparations for the FIRST Pug Rescue of NC's expected litter of puppies.
November 6, 2005:
I received another call from Cathleen worried to death about Ivey not wanting to eat, or drink, she was also vomiting everything back up! She called the vet and she advised to take her to the ER vet and bring her to the office first thing the next morning. Cathleen called her good friend, Debbie and Pug Rescue of NC volunteer for help and assist with Ivey since she is a vet tech and works in a veterinary hospital. Cathleen and Debbie took Ivey to the Tidewater Veterinary Emergency Hospital where she recieved IV fluids for dehydration, an injection of Pepcid/Tagamet, and another anti-vomiting medication and sent her home for the night. Meanwhile.............Cathleen prepares the sofa and sleeps with Ivey to assure she will be ok until morning.November 7, 2005:
Cathleen took Ivey to her vet that did the heartworm treatment and was there on at 8am. We knew Ivey may be losing the puppies, but nothing could have prepared us to hear to worst of the news later that day..........................Ivey was losing blood somewhere, her blood count was only 18, her heart was enlarged, she was going into kidney failure and we were losing her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Ivey was moved to Tidewater Veterinary Emergency Hospital, under the caring hands of Dr. Karen Smithwick, DVM for a blood transfusion, IV's and care for the next 24 to 48 hours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
November 7, 2005:
Tidewater Veterinary Emergency Hospital. The call comes in at 3am this morning; the vet had to take Ivey babies by emergency c-section! There were 10 dead puppies in Ivey! She receives another blood transfusion this morning. She will remain in ICU until she regains strength, her blood pressure critically low and her lungs filled with fluid. At 3:30 pm today, Ivey has been able to maintain her temperature so far...........................
During the c section, when the uterus was opened all the baby puppies’ sacs were full of pus. The doctor had to remove the uterus to save Ivey. They found that her liver was enlarged. No one knows if this is from the heartworm treatment or the large infection she was fighting but could account for the blood loss. After surgery, they had trouble waking her up. Her blood pressure was low and her temperature was low. Ivey was probably septic from the infection. Heating blankets and medications helped Ivey to continue her fight.
Cathleen and Debbie were able to visit Ivey at 12 noon today, and make sure Ivey knew we had not abandoned her. Ivey giving us her all, she was able to muster the energy to look at me in the eye as to say: I love you and thank you..........
This evening, I got a scary call, knowing they would only call when things are bad. They told me that she went into pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs) they had to give her oxygen and Lasix.
Once they had her stabilized, again she sat up in her cage for the first time
Cathleen was given permission to visit her beloved foster child and was allowed only 2 minutes with her, but she had her eyes on Cathleen the whole time. She talked to her and petted her. It was worth the drive to let Ivey know that we are still with her in her fight to live. I did not want Ivey to think she had been abandoned again. We all urgently wait for her to be able to come home...................
Please God, put your arms around IVEY and save her.......I called again at 10 pm and there was no change, and will call though out the night to check on her. I will also call before the change of shift in the morning.
Everyone at the vet has been super and pulling for Ivey. From the girls at the desk to everyone that has had hands on with Ivey.
More updates to follow:
Cathleen, Debbie and I on pins and needles worried to death, sit waiting and praying Ivey would be OK and come back home.................. Ivey's loving Foster Mom, will continue to visit her to give her words of encouragement in hopes to lift her spirits and will to survive!
At this point, we already have a vet bill over $2,000.00 and climbing for Ivey, we just cannot let her die !!!.......... Thank heavens for credit cards!
I humbly beg you all................. If you could please dig just a little deeper into your pockets and help us save Ivey, please do it now! We desperately need your help in donations and prayer to save this darling sweet pug!November 9 2005:
I couldn't sleep, just laying in bed with her on my mind,
............just thinking just how bad and scary Ivey's situation
was.............. in the back on my mind and something deep in my heart told
me she was not going to make it............................ I got up......
fix myself something to eat at 1 am, because I never had time to eat all day
on the 8th,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Then that call came in
...................ring......ring..........ring................My heart
stopped.........................I knew in my heart what that call
was...................
......................Dear Ivey passed away..........................
Ivey's internal organs started to fail, they were unable to even get a blood pressure at the end.
May this poor soul rest in peace, as we wait to meet again at the Rainbow Bridge............
"THANK YOU ALL"
